Chapter 141: Traffic accident!

The vice director of neurovascular surgery at Chasu City Hospital was named Wang Weiping. He was a graduate from a well-respected college. Wang Weiping had worked hard as a doctor for all his life, and was scheduled to retire next year. Although he didn't really want to, his years were catching up to him—he was already 59 years old.

Wang Weiping was the really nice and friendly type who was always willing to take work shifts for others if they had anything else they needed to do instead. As Wang Weiping put it, "I only have a year left before my retirement. I want to do as much as I can before then!"

He was a veteran doctor and all-around nice guy who had a good reputation with both his patients and coworkers. Wang Weiping would always happily help out anyone who needed help. Over the years, he had gained many friends, and had excellent relationships with his coworkers.

Although he was now too old to personally perform surgery on patients, he was the teaching doctor for several younger doctors. Sometimes, he would still need to take over in special circumstances.

The weather was quite hot. Many people would have barbeques and drink beer outside in such weather. This meant that there were many drunkards. At five a.m., Wang Weiping was woken up by a phone call. A cerebral infarction patient in the neurovascular surgery department was in bad condition, so one of Wang Weiping's subordinate doctors had phoned him.

Wang Weiping was worried about the quality of his wife's sleep since she was just as old as he was. He even changed his clothes in the living room instead of the bedroom, but didn't realize that his wife had already been woken up by the phone call.

"Sigh! He has to work overtime at such a time yet again!" She sighed as she checked the time.

Wang Weiping left his residence, got on his bicycle, and biked towards the hospital! As he was crossing an intersection, a motorcycle suddenly zoomed out from the side!

The motorcycle operator didn't notice the old man on the bike until it was too late! The motorcycle crashed into the bicycle!

The motorcycle also fell over from the impact! Wang Weiping was instantly knocked unconscious! The motorcycle operator was a young man. There was also a young woman seated behind him as his passenger. Both of them were rather drunk after partying all night. Although there was some blood on them, neither of them were seriously injured. The drunk motorcycle operator was scared out of his drunkenness when he saw the old man who had collapsed on the ground from the collision!

The young man called for an ambulance! When the emergency treatment doctor arrived at the accident scene, he discovered to his surprise that the accident victim was Vice Director Wang Weiping from the same hospital!

The doctor looked around, but found nobody around at all. The motorcycle operator and passenger had run off, not wanting to take responsibility for their crime!

The ambulance's sirens sounded especially piercing since it was early in the morning. Vice Director Wang Weiping from Chasu City Hospital had been injured in a traffic accident! The emergency department immediately reported this to the hospital administration department, which then reported it to Superintendent Ouyang.

Superintendent Ouyang immediately got out of her bed and went to the hospital. Wang Weiping's condition was quite bad. He had received a powerful impact that caused a pelvic fracture and major bleeding. He was already in medical shock! Also, he had road rash all over his face, with bleeding and severe swollenness.

Superintendent Ouyang had a steely expression as she gave the command to save his life! The police also arrived. It would be the police's job to catch the culprit responsible for the traffic accident, while saving Wang Weiping's life would be the hospital's job! Both orthopedic surgery directors, the neurosurgery director, and cardiology director had all arrived, and were ready for work at a moment's notice.

At such a moment, everyone would feel bad for their fellow coworker! Even if they couldn't be of any help, simply standing outside the emergency treatment room would also be a type of strength! More and more doctors learned about what happened to Vice Director Wang Weiping. Even though it wasn't time for the doctors' day shifts to begin yet, almost all the doctors of Chasu City Hospital had already arrived at the emergency department. Anyone who didn't arrive and show support at such a time would be burying their career as a doctor here!

There was pure silence. Not a single person chatted idly. All the doctors had solemn expressions! The patient in the emergency treatment room was their coworker, their teacher, their fellow doctor who had been injured due to being called in for overtime for an emergency patient's sake!

"He will absolutely require immediate surgery!" Orthopedic surgery department #1's Director Gao Shijun and orthopedic department #2's Director Wang Dehua both agreed on this assessment as they reported to Superintendent Ouyang.

Wang Weiping's wife also heard that her husband had been seriously injured in a traffic accident. Since she already had high blood pressure for many years already, she instantly fainted from the news. The other doctors were afraid that she would suffer even more problems if she received too much stimulation, so they used sedatives on her. She was now sleeping in the cardiology department.

Wang Weiping only had one child, a son. However, his son was currently in southern China, and wouldn't be able to come here that quickly. Performing surgery in China would always require a signature from someone in the family! But, this surgery was highly risky. Nobody else in Wang Weiping's family had the courage to take responsibility and sign for the surgery.

Superintendent Ouyang had a steely expression as she declared, "Prepare to begin the surgery. I will personally sign the surgery agreement paperwork! We can't disappoint our Vice Director Wang! Comrades from orthopedic surgery, please do your very best and cooperate together!"

No ordinary patient would ever have two department directors simultaneously working on their surgery. However, that was precisely the situation at hand. Which orthopedic director would be the one to perform the surgery for Wang Weiping? Both of them really wanted to perform the surgery for the sake of their coworker! For the sake of all the time that they had spent together! It was also difficult for Superintendent Ouyang to choose a primary surgeon.

But, who would be the primary surgeon? The primary surgeon would also need to sign the surgery paperwork! Both Director Gao Shijun and Director Wang Dehua took out their pens, trying to sign the paperwork. Both of them refused to budge for the other. Both directors were also of roughly equal skill level in orthopedic surgery. If this issue wasn't dealt with well, one of the two directors would lose a serious amount of face, and face was incredibly important to higher-ranking doctors such as department directors. Yet, time was of the essence for the patient right now.

At this time, Superintendent Ouyang displayed her own style and political skills. She slammed her fist on her table and declared, "Both of you shall be surgical assistants! The primary surgeon shall be Zhang Fan! Zhang Fan!"

"I'm here!" The doctors parted to make way for Zhang Fan. Everyone was now looking at him as he swiftly walked over. Zhang Fan had arrived long ago because he also knew that it was important to show his support in such a situation!

"Our Vice Director Wang Weiping is in grave danger right now due to a pelvic fracture with major bleeding. He's already in medical shock! Do you have the confidence that you can save him!"

"I do!"

"Say it loudly."

"I DO!" Zhang Fan spoke in a much louder voice.

"You begin the surgery. Director Gao and Director Wang will be your surgical assistants. Directors, allow our young doctor here to grow by using you as stepping stones! Vice Director Wang who's the patient will also be happy to see this!" Superintendent Ouyang stood on a platform as she announced this. She managed to turn this tragic scene into a hot-blooded scene of passion.

Zhang Fan originally only had some fame in the surgical departments, but with this, he completely became famous throughout the entire hospital. The superintendent was giving such an important task to him. Two department directors were acting as his surgical assistants. How could he possibly be just an ordinary doctor?

In such a situation, if a doctor didn't have some skills, they wouldn't even dare to step forward, much less perform this surgery!

"The surgery will soon begin. Comrades, the patient is an old doctor who's worked at our hospital for more than half of his life. He's contributed so much to the hospital! Comrades, I expect that he will require a significant amount of blood for transfusion. All of you who are capable of donating blood, go do the checkups immediately and prepare to donate blood! I will be the first to donate blood! This is no order or request, but rather something we can all do for a fellow coworker to show our appreciation!"

The hospital was always short on blood. It was quite common that the doctors would have to donate blood whenever there was an emergency!

There was now a long line of doctors, and an equally long line of nurses withdrew their blood! Superintendent Ouyang was the first to donate blood, just as she had promised.

The director of the laboratory department tried to refuse her donating blood since Superintendent Ouyang was getting old, and because this director was also quite smart about trying to suck up to her. However, Superintendent Ouyang ordered the director to take her blood! Thus, he had to take her blood, but he then took the opportunity to be the second person to donate blood!

On this morning, there were countless doctors as well as nurses all donating blood. This was the power of being a good person! Although Wang Weiping wasn't someone every single person loved, the great majority of doctors and nurses who knew him had great respect for him. His work attitude and way of treating others set an excellent example for others.

Wang Weiping always had a smile for everyone, no matter if he was talking to a high-ranking doctor or low-ranking nurse! He was always the super approachable type who tried his best to help anyone who asked him for it. He had accumulated a great amount of good reputation over the years, which helped him immensely today.

With such a tremendous commotion at the hospital, the media got wind of what was going on as well. Reporters kept interviewing and taking pictures of all the doctors and nurses who held their arms after donating blood! Of course, the most important person to focus on was Superintendent Ouyang. Her personal style and how she managed the hospital had now completely overwritten everyone's memories from the previous Superintendent Huang Yun's time.

Superintendent Ouyang spoke in a sonorous and forceful tone as she was interviewed by the reporters. She didn't mention anything about the traffic accident, instead focusing on Vice Director Wang Weiping's contributions, work ethic, and approachability. She also talked about how the hospital would do its very best to save him, along with how great the Communist Party and Chinese government were. She was simply speaking formalities, but she was using them highly skillfully.

Wang Weiping's wife was given much attention and care. Her husband's traffic accident had shocked her far too much.

Wang Weiping's son had already gotten on a plane heading to the border province. Over the phone, he formally agreed to give Superintendent Ouyang the power to make life-and-death decisions for his father as necessary. But even if he hadn't, with Superintendent Ouyang's personality, she would have taken the responsibility regardless.

Hospitals were a rather unique workplace. Typically, everyone competed with each other, and there would be all sorts of secret scheming and bad relationships, but whenever such an incident occurred, everyone would be especially unified. They would all do their very best and contribute however they could, such as by donating blood. They would all say the same things to outsiders as they helped each other get through this difficult time.
